Veil Was Torn
What happened in the temple?
We talk about and focus on the events leading up to, and including, Christ’s death on the cross – then, sort of, hop on over to what happened on Easter – or, “Resurrection Sunday”. But, did you ever stop to consider the significance of what happened in the temple the moment Christ died on the cross?
Don’t miss this.
The temple was an important and central part of the Jewish faith.
Under the old testament sacrificial system, the common people would bring their sacrificial offerings to the common area around the temple.
From there, priests would take their sacrificial offerings into the main hall of the temple referred to as the, “holy place”. The sacrificial offerings would be made to God in the holy place.
On one end of the holy place was an enclosed room that was separated from the holy place by a heavy, thick, veil.
Some estimates are the veil was 4-inches thick and as much as 60-feet high. This room was referred to as the “Holy of holies”. It was God’s throne room on earth.
And, the veil separated us from God.
Only the high priest could go through this veil to enter the Holy of holies – only he could enter into the very presence of God.
He could only enter once every year and, when he did, he had to tie a rope around his waist so, if something should happen while he was in the Holy of holies, the other priests could pull him out without going into the Holy of holies.
Interesting to note, at one point of His ministry, Jesus said to the religious leaders, John 2:19, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”. They, of course, thought He was talking of the physical temple. However, as we read a bit further, we learn He was talking about the temple that was His body.
They did destroy His body.
And, at the moment of His death, that veil in the temple was torn in half – not from the bottom upwards but, rather, from the top downwards.
The significance is this: the veil is torn and we now have full access to God by and through our High Priest, Jesus Christ, who is God.
He shed His blood on the cross and became a sacrifice for us – one time for all The old sacrificial system was ended. The veil was torn. And, well, God has left the building.
Now, we have Christ.
Blessings.
