Stones to Bread
There’s a meme I remember seeing recently – of course, I cannot seem to find it now that I want it. However, in this meme, as I recall, there are two people chatting with each other and their conversation goes something like this:
Person 1, “I’ve given up praying – I never hear anything from God”.
Person 2, “Try reading your Bible”.
Person 1, “But, I want to *hear* God”.
Person 2, “Okay, read your Bible out loud”.
Mm, hm. Okay then.
The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness for 40 days. And, we learn through reading God’s Word, the Bible, that during His journey, Christ fasted those 40 days and, towards the end, naturally, He was hungry.
So, as he does with all of us, the devil took advantage of the situation to tempt Jesus to do something He shouldn’t do. However, Christ resisted the devil’s temptations.
In the first of the three temptations, the devil tempted Jesus to turn a stone into bread. Jesus responded by saying [paraphrased],
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God”.
On the surface, Christ resisted the temptation by quoting scripture. But, look a bit deeper. Among His many names and titles, scripture also refers to Christ as the “Bread of Life”.
Part of what I believe He is saying here is accepting, receiving and following Him is important, yes! But, we shall not live on Bread alone. Rather, we are all called to feast on the Word of God – to read the Bible – regularly. And, to not just read it but to share it with others.
We need to read the Bible as much as we need a relationship with Christ.
Of course, if you want to *hear* it instead, read it out loud.
In any case, you want to know what God is saying to you?
Read His Word, the Bible.
Not sure where to begin? Try the gospel (the “good news”) of the book of John.
Peace and Blessings.
