In the Beginning
Seems like a great place to start … In The Beginning.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.“
–Genesis 1:1-2 NKJV
In six days, God did what? He “created”. On the first day, God created light (notice here, He created “light” before He created the sun and the moon!). Also, on the first day, He created the days and night.
On the second day, God created a firmament–that is, heaven.
On the third day, God brought forth the dry land we call “Earth”, and created trees, and plants, and all sorts of vegetation.
On the fourth day, God created and brought forth the sun and the moon. The sun for our days, and the moon to light our paths through the night. Both to give us signs and cues for the seasons,
On the fifth day, God created the creatures of the sea and birds of the air.
On the sixth day, oh wow! On the sixth day, God created cattle, and “creeping things”, and the beasts of the field and every kind of land animal, and …
oh wow! Are you ready for this? …
God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Whew!
Finally, after all of His creating, on the seventh day, God rested.
The “prescription” (if you will) is “seven”.
As God did, six days we work. In six days, we take care of all the business we need to take care of, but, on the seventh day. Yes, EVERY SEVENTH DAY … we rest from all our labors.
We take a break. We take a breath. We sit back, relax, and chill for a bit.
We rest — just as God rested on the seventh day.
We renew, refresh, re-energize, and get ready to do it all again. But, only when its time to do it all again.
Thank You, O God, for this day of rest, and relaxation. Thank You for Your awesome, bountiful, creation; and, for all You have done and continue to do in our lives each day. We don’t ask for anything from You at this moment, we just come to give thanks for all You have done. Thank You, O God. Amen.
